International Potluck Dinner

Monday night, we had a great potluck dinner. We had various food ranging from pasta to biscuits and gravy to Chinese rice crispy treats. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food, music, and conversation, so we are definitely going to have this event again!

Bowling Social Event

About 50 Beta Alpha Psi members came to our semi-annual bowling event. It was a great chance for people to mingle with other members in a fun and informal setting.
We were also very excited that Julie Head, our advisor and accounting professor, participated and enjoyed bowling with our members.

Winslow Woods Maintenance with Crowe Horwath

Crowe Horwath and Beta Alpha Psi joined forces at Winslow Woods Park to serve at a community service project with Bloomington Park and Recreation Services. Volunteers worked on gardens and forest maintenance by chopping down or pulling out invasive plants. Many low-income families and elderly people from around the area rely on the community garden that we worked on. Crowe Horwath representatives and Beta Alpha Psi members mingled and had many inspiring conversations at lunch, which concluded the meaningful community s ervice and networking event.

BAP Career Fair, 9/5/2012

This year’s accounting and finance career fair provided the opportunity for over 100 companies to recruit Kelley talent. It was also the first year that the career fair was at the Bloomington Convention Center and in conjunction with the finance career fair. The BAP Career Fair has become the premier accounting and finance recruiting event held for Kelley students in the Fall semester. If you are looking for a summer internship or full-time job, this fair is a must.

As Vice President of BAP Special Events, I was provided with the opportunity to interact with many of these firms and coordinate volunteers. Given that this was the first year the event was held along with the Finance Career Fair, and at the much larger Bloomington Convention Center, there were many new challenges encountered. More BAP volunteers were required than ever before, giving more members the opportunity to network with the representatives from the recruiting firms. Members were also provided with the opportunity to wear custom name tags, making them stand out against all other attendants.

The BAP Career Fair is BAP’s biggest event of the year and provides many of our members with opportunities other clubs cannot. The number of firms interested in attending this event continually increases. It’s great to be a part to be part of the group that organizes this event and some of the talent that keeps bringing these firms back year after year.

Boys and Girls’ Club Volunteering

Every semester Beta Alpha Psi members make a commitment to tutor elementary school children in Math and Reading at the Boys and Girls Club every week. The state of Indiana requires each student to increase 15% in math and reading skills every year, and last year students tutored through the program averaged a 23% increase in math and a 46% increase in reading! Not only are our members able to help produce these excellent results, we also build positive relationships and enjoy working with a great group of kids.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake

Beta Alpha Psi raised money for the event Bowl For Kids Sake, Big Brothers Big Sisters’ biggest annual fundraiser. This year the team of 6 raised over $800 for the cause. The fundraising culminated in a night of bowling at Classic Lanes as well as taking pictures in costumes and even a limbo contest, which our very own Yun Chen won! This was a great opportunity to have fun in addition to giving back to the community.

Roger CPA Review, 10-26-2011:
On October 26, 2011, Roger Philipp, CEO of Roger CPA Review, spoke to BAP and SAS students about the interviewing process and also the CPA exam and how to prepare for it. Afterwards students enjoyed subs and asked Roger further questions.

INCPAS, 11-2-11:

On November 2nd, 2011, a representative from INCPAS spoke to BAP/SAS members about the CPA exam and what it takes to be a CPA. Afterwards students asked further questions and enjoyed pasta.

BKD, 11-9-11:

On November 9th, 2011, a representative from BKD spoke to BAP/SAS members about trends in the construction, real estate, and healthcare industries. Afterwards students networked over pizza.

Crowe Horwath, 11-16-11:
On November 16th, 2011, a representative from Crowe Horwath spoke to BAP/SAS members about how to be successful in the field of public accounting. Students enjoyed pizza afterwards while networking.

September Professional Events

PwC 9-7-11:
On September 7th, 2011, PwC presented to Beta Alpha Psi, Student Accounting Society, and the Technology Management Club. PwC presented in two separate rooms, one focusing on Audit/Tax service lines, and the other focusing on Advisory service lines. Afterwards students networked with professionals while enjoying pizza.

KPMG, 9-14-2011:
KPMG presented to BAP, SAS, and TMC on September 14, 2011. Representatives from KPMG presented on Audit and Tax Services in Room CG1040 and on Advisory Services in Room CG1050. Afterwards, students enjoyed pizza while networking with KPMG professionals.

Ernst & Young, 9-21-11:
Ernst & Young presented to members of Beta Alpha Psi, Student Accounting Society, and the Technology Management Club. EY representatives spoke about Audit/Tax in one room and ITRA/IT Advisory in another. Afterwards, networking took place over sandwiches.

Deloitte, 9-28-2011:
Professionals from Deloitte presented to BAP and SAS members. The presenters highlighted some of their experiences in different roles for the firm. Afterwards students networked with the representatives while enjoying pizza.

BAP Leadership Day 2011

The Beta Alpha Psi Leadership Day was held on April 8, 2011. The event brought in all the big 4 firms to host either a presentation or activity to build up member’s leadership skills. The participants each saw one activity and one presentation. Members were given time after each was completed to ask questions about the firm and to network with the professionals.

Participants of Ernst & Young’s interactive leadership activity were able to learn why teamwork is essential to the success of any business. Members split off into groups and started constructing a jigsaw puzzle. Midway through building the puzzle, E&Y’s recruiter, Jill, had each group switch puzzles and start working on another partially completed puzzle. Through these unexpected changes in the groups’ dynamics in this interactive activity, each group was able to identify why teamwork is key.

Michael Clarke, an international tax professional from Deloitte, discussed what makes an individual a leader. He recalled his experiences with Deloitte to display that anyone can be a leader, not just those who are supposed to be the leaders. Michael highlighted that leaders display integrity and perseverance in times of adversity. All of the participants in Deloitte’s presentation learned that having a passion will ensure your success and make you a well-rounded leader.

Ann Schmal, the KPMG Campus Recruiter, presented an analysis on discovering our leadership style. Participants discussed the qualities a good leader needs to possess and the four main different leadership types: analytical, amiable, expressive, and driver. After answering eighteen questions, members determined their individual leadership style. In groups, members examined the pros and cons of each style. Members learned about catering the leadership styles to different projects and Ann answered questions about distinguishing features that set KPMG apart from other firms.

Adam Van Treese, Lauren Suttner, Matthew Roberts, and Kathryn Quincy headed the PwC leadership activity. Members split into two groups for a friendly, head-to-head competition. Each group then separated into a few builders and a few communicators with two PwC professionals observing and engaging with the competing groups. The builders had a pile of K’NEX in front of them and the communicators held a built K’NEX vehicle. The task involved the communicators describing to the builders how to construct the vehicle while not looking at each other. After the first round, the two groups then switched vehicles and within the groups the builders and communicators switched roles. The cumulative time for building both vehicles determined the winning group. After the activity, the PwC professionals offered feedback and created a discussion on effective communication and leadership while also answering many questions about the firm.

Overall, the event was a great success. All students who provided feedback had nothing but positive things to say. We hope to continue to have this event in the future.
